Competitive works are evaluated by recognized pastel artists from all over the world (Europe, Asia, Australia, South and North America, North Africa and the Middle East).

The author may submit to the competition any number of works, including series - up to 3 sheets, in one or more nominations. Each work is evaluated as an independent work, with its own rating. A series is evaluated as one piece (diptych, triptych).

Expert Council / Jury

The professional composition of the Expert Council includes: leaders of international communities of pasthelist artists, famous and successful pasthelist artists, winners of competitions, as well as art historians, gallerists and curators.

The work of the Expert Council (jury) includes the evaluation of works submitted to the competition on a 10-point system. The scores are summed and the average arithmetic score is determined. See "General Jury List".

Registration fees and payment methods

The author can submit any number of works to the Pastelium International Competition of Pastelists "PASTELIUM". Solo works and series of up to three drawings are allowed to participate. The series works price is calculated for each art object in that series.

Cost of participation:
 
a) For members of the Eurasian Art Union:
        - the first sheet is 15 euros,
        - for each subsequent sheet - 7 euros.
b) For artists who are not members of the Eurasian Art Union (join the pastel section of the Eurasian Art Union): 
- the first sheet - 30 euros,
- for each next sheet - 15 euros.

Each artist can submit any number of works (semi-final). No more than three works from one artist will be selected for the finale.

The participation fee must be paid within 3 days after you receive the invoice but no later than 10 february 2020. If the work is not selected for the exhibition, entry fees will not be refunded.

Catalog "PASTELium in the World"

All entries for the competition are printed in the catalog. Catalogue structure: 1st part - winners (finalists), second part - other participants. Catalog size: A4, color 4 + 4, in two or more European languages

For the final of the contest the author provides a work prepared for exhibiting (the requirements are specified in the section "Regulations"). In case assistance in the design is required, the Organizing Committee is ready to provide the necessary assistance in the design of competitive works. The design cost, including glass and frame, is as follows:

Transportation to the exhibition:
In case the author does not have the opportunity to bring paintings to the Exhibition Center of the St. Petersburg Union of Artists strictly on March 2, 2020, from 11 to 15.00, it is possible to entrust transportation of in person participance art objects to the organizing committee. Collection of works for transportation is carried out in Moscow and Minsk.

Transportation Cost:

- transportation from Moscow 8 euros / canvas / for each direction "Moscow - St. Petersburg" or "St. Petersburg - Moscow",
- transportation from Minsk: 11 euros / canvas for each direction "Minsk - St. Petersburg" or "St. Petersburg - Minsk"

General rules for participation

The international contest of patel artists "PASTELium" is open to artists from any country in the world, everyone have equal rights and are evaluated by jury members according to the same criteria.

The contest is held in several countries around the world. The next contest and exhibition "PASTELium" will be held in St. Petersburg.

Dates of the contest in St. Petersburg: March 2-8, 2019.
Registration for the contest: until February 10, 2020.
Exhibition address: Exhibition Hall of the St. Petersburg Union of Artists (St. Petersburg, Bolshaya Morskaya street, 38).

The contest is held in three stages:

Stage 1 (semi-final): Includes providing by the author of his works in the form of digital files. The number of applications you can submit is unlimited.

Stage 2: Evaluation of presented works by members of the jury.The Expert Council / Jury consists of leading pastel artists from Europe, Asia, North and South America, the Middle East and Australia.

Stage 3 (final): presentation in the exhibition space of works that received the highest rating. The number of works presented at final exhibition is at least 60, or at least 6 works in each nomination. At the finals the original works or their photocopies, decorated in a frame, are exhibited. В рамках третьего этапа будут проведены многочисленные мастер-классы по сухой пастели. 

Catalog:

All works participating in the first stage will be published in the full color catalogue "PASTELium in the World" (in two or more languages). Each work will be presented on a separate page.

Requirements for competitive works:

Work must be created with at least 80% soft pastel; without the use of oil pastels. Nupastel and other "more complex" pastels are considered soft pastels. The presence of other materials is allowed - a maximum of 20%.

All works must be original. Compositions based on published materials or works by other artists are NOT considered original and are not eligible. Paintings made in a workshop under the supervision of another artist, or paintings based on a photograph of another person (even if it is not protected by copyright), are NOT eligible. Employees or partners of the World Fund of Arts, any sponsoring organization or their next of kin may not be among the participants of the competition program and may be represented at the exhibition as an exhibition participants (non-contest), in excess of the quota allocated to contestants. The organizing committee of the contest reserves the right to reject work that is considered unsuitable for publication or does not meet the above criteria.

Size of entries:
- maximum: up to 120 cm on the larger side;
- minimum: at least 30 cm. on the larger side.

Image Requirements:

JPG or .TIFF files are sent to the contest, preferably in CMYK, resolution 300 dpi at A4 size (please try to keep the file size of at least 1 MB and not more than 25 MB to ensure correct download and color reproduction).

All participants must be prepared to be able to replace the file with a higher resolution if the work data is among those selected as a winner.

Regulation on the number of works submitted to the competition:

The author has the right to submit to the competition any number of his own works. It is possible to present a series of up to three figures (payment is made for each figure). A job that has won the PASTELium contest cannot re-enter the contest held in another city. Only works that have not won prizes are eligible to be a registered author in the next competitive selection for PASTELium, held in another city. In the PASTELium contest there is no requirement for premiereness of the work, that is, work previously published in a national art publication or awarded at a national level exhibition of any competition among pastel artists, except for the PASTELium contest, has the right to take part in the PASTELium contest in any city where it is held .

Signs and Signatures

Signature, seal or any other identification mark of authorship is allowed anywhere in the photo image. Subsequently, competitive images are published in the catalog and on the site with copyright marks. Inscriptions with the names of art objects on the front side are not allowed.

Further use of photographs of competitive works:

The copyright for the work remains with the artist. In case art objects are provided to the contest by the author 's representative (producer), the responsibility for authorship lies with the applicant. The Organizing Committee has the right to use the name (pseudonym) and photo images of the competitive works participating in the contest and exhibition for the purpose of advertising and popularizing the PASTELium International Contest, and for non-commercial use as an illustration and publication in the media. All participants understand that any image submitted to the contest can be used by the organizing committee for marketing and advertising purposes, including non-commercial publication in any media such as exhibitions, print and digital media. By participating in the contest, the author (applicant) agrees to include his works and photographs of the author in the exhibition catalog.
The organizing committee of the International contest "PASTELium | PASTELium" is not responsible for art objects and their photo images provided in violation of the contest rules or for those who violate the copyright, as in this case the person applying for participation in the competition program (applicant) is responsible.

By participating in the "PASTELium | PASTELium" contest, the author agrees to include his phone and email in the free newsletters notifying of exhibitions in Russia and abroad.

How to participate (step by step)

Application deadline: February 10, 2020

The international pastel artists contest "PASTELium" is open to artists from any country in the world. All participants in the competition have equal rights and are evaluated by jury members according to the same criteria. The contests is held in several countries around the world. The sequence of registration for the contest:

The competition is held in two stages - semi-final and final. All competitive applications sent to the organizing committee within the specified terms are credited to the semi-final. Exception: works that violate social norms, insulting the feelings of believers or politically engaged are not allowed for the contest.

Stage 1 (semi-final):

The author or his impresario sends the following set of registration materials to the Organizing Committee:

1) application form (download in format Word, PDF);
2) labels for each competition entry (download in format Word, PDF);
3) photo of the author (at least 3x4 cm in size);
4) photographs of competitive works (not less than 200 dpi, not more than 20 Mb);

а) первое извещение: автоматическое уведомление - автоответчик, подтверждающий, что материалы поступили в оргкомитет для обработки;
б) the second notice from the administrator, indicating the "Participant number" assigned by the organizing committee (the number is placed on a label that the Organizing Committee sends to the author). The number of labels corresponds to the number of submitted works.

Jury / Expert Council:

In the period from February 11 to February 16, 2020, the jury will evaluate the submitted works. The Expert Council / Jury consists of leading pastel artists from Europe, Asia, North and South America, Middle East and Australia. The list of members of the jury of the contest in St. Petersburg will be posted in the section "Jury of the contest in St. Petersburg."

Stage 2 (final):

The finalists will be announced on February 18, 2020. Full rating of all submitted works will be published on website. Works that have received maximum points will be presented in the exhibition space. The number of works presented at final exhibition is at least 60, or at least 6 works in each nomination. At the finals the original works or their photocopies, decorated in a frame, are exhibited.
Authors who receive an invitation to participate in the finals must prepare their works for exhibiting.

Requirements for paintings:

  • All works must have a standard design - mat, frame and protection of the work (glass or plastic). The use of museum glass is encouraged. Use of plastic instead of glass is allowed.
  • Frames should be neutral in color and shape..
  • Passepartout for paintings is allowed in shades of white, gray or black.
  • The picture submitted to the exhibition must correspond to the digital image uploaded at the time of application. Otherwise, the organizer may refuse to accept the work.
For the final of the contest the author provides a work prepared for exhibiting (the requirements are specified in the section "Regulations"). In case assistance in the design is required, the Organizing Committee is ready to provide the necessary assistance in the design of competitive works. The organizing committee is not responsible for the loss or damage to the picture, or frame during delivery and hanging. The space we rented for the exhibition is equipped with security cameras. The exhibition administrator is present in the gallery during the exhibition.

During the finalists' exhibition, numerous master classes and pastel lectures will be held. Contest participants (semi-finalists and finalists) have the opportunity to take part in the programs held at the competition by pre-registering. 

The end of the exhibition and the issuance of works

At the end of the exhibition, the author or trustee receives paintings, according to the card/transfer act. Date of issue of art objects: March 8, 2020, after the end of the award ceremony (from 17.00 to 20.00).
